Trenton Lock 1 Hydro Project
Project Trenton Lock 1 Hydro Project
Ontario LRP I RFP
In March 2016, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) released the list of 16 contracts that have been offered under the Large Renewable Procurement (LRP), a competitive process for procuring large renewable energy projects generally greater than 500 kilowatts.
The Trenton hydroelectric project which is currently being developed by Hydromega was amongst those projects selected by the IESO.
The 16 contracts offered represent 454.885 megawatts (MW) of clean renewable energy capacity. This capacity contributes to the achievement of the province’s renewable energy targets. The results include:
- five wind contracts totalling 299.5 MW, with a weighted average price of 8.59 cents/kWh;
- seven solar contracts totalling 139.885 MW, with a weighted average price of 15.67 cents/kWh; and
- four hydroelectric contracts totalling 15.5 MW, with a weighted average price of 17.59 cents/kWh.
Of these, more than 80 percent or 13 projects (319.9 MW) include participation from one or more Aboriginal communities, which is the case for the Trenton project. That includes five projects with more than 50 percent Aboriginal participation. Additionally, 75 percent of the successful proposals had received support from local municipalities, and more than 60 percent had support from abutting landowners.
Hydromega is an independent power producer of renewable energy specialized in the conception, construction, financing and operation of independent electric facilities in Quebec and Ontario.

The final arrangement of the Project will be refined as results of site investigations, engineering, environmental features and public consultations.
Community Engagement Plan
Hydromega has been developing renewable energy projects for more than 27 years and we take great pride in the efforts made to develop successful projects that have benefited from high social acceptability.
In order to meet high standards of consultation, and as per the LRP I requirements, Hydromega has prepared a Community Engagement Plan which details the public consultation measures that will be put in place during the development of the Project.
The objectives of this consultation process are:
- Identifying interested parties and stakeholders,
- Engaging early in the development process with interested parties and stakeholders;
- Consulting with local and regional communities and First Nations;
- Providing detailed information on the Project;
- Identifying interested parties and stakeholders’ concerns in order to address them at all stage of the development.
Consultation will enable Hydromega to obtain and use stakeholders knowledge for Project development and in the assessment of any potential environmental impacts.
The Community Engagement Plan can be consulted here.
